Summertime @ Your Library is for kids of all ages.  From books and bytes to mime, magic and music, you’ll discover that your Library is an exciting place for the whole family.  As you browse through our Newsletter, you’ll find a full menu of happenings to feast upon during the glorious days of summer.  Whether it’s a stimulating book discussion in our TALC group, a family movie or concert, or an exploration of the world through the treasure of books, there’s something to delight everyone’s taste.  We invite you all to celebrate the Summer of ’06 @ Your Library, your center for community activities.

SUMMER LIBRARY EVENTS

 

Summer Fortnightly Readers – A Library tradition, a summer book discussion group which meets two Thursdays a month at 4:30 p.m.  New and returning members are enthusiastically welcomed, so come to read and discuss books on a wide variety of topics.  Join us in our air-conditioned community room for good books, good talk, and cool refreshments.  Registration is required.  This summer’s schedule:

Around the World Book Group – Our popular book group devoted to readings from around the world.  Meets monthly on Tuesdays at 7:30 p.m.  Registration is required.  Call the Library for more information.  Next meeting is June 20.  Book is Oleander Jacaranda, by Penelope Lively.

 

A Class Act – A treasure chest of songs and fun with

Summer TALC (The Adult Learning Center) presents Down Memory Lane: Two Friday Literary Lunches.

Both sessions from 12 noon to 1:30 p.m.  Bring a sandwich. The Library will provide iced tea and cookies. Fee is $20 per session.  You may attend one session or both.  Registration is required.  Enrollment is limited.

 

Writing the Memoir – A memoir-writing class open to writers of all abilities conducted by Elinore Standard, lecturer, essayist and author.  A limited number of sessions will be held during the summer on Wednesdays at 2:00 p.m.  Registration is required, and enrollment is limited.  For more information, call the Library.

 

Adult Computer InstructionFridays, July 14 and July 28, 10:30 – 11:30 a.m.  A small group tour of the Library’s technology.  Share a computer and learn how to navigate it.  Register for one session only.  Please register by July 7.  Regular Internet instruction continues on Fridays at 10:30 a.m., except for the above dates.

Summer Loan Policy:  The Library once again offers a summer extended-loan policy for vacationers.  Books on reserve and 14-Day books are excluded.

 

Summer Saturday Hours:  10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.  Memorial Day through Labor Day.

 
The Library will be closed on Tuesday, July 4, Independence Day.

 

 

YOUTH SERVICES

 

Babysitting Clinic – With Leslie Hunt, R.N.  Teaches basic child care and emergency techniques.  Ages 11 and up.  Tuesday, June 27, 4:00 – 6:00 p.m.  Registration required.

 

Chess Fest – Beginners to advanced.  Bring your chess set if you have one, or we’ll provide one for you.  All ages welcome.  Six Tuesdays from July 11 – August 15, 3:30 p.m.  Registration is required.

 

Mother/Daughter Book Group (a program for middle schoolers and their moms) will take a summer break, but will resume in the fall.  Date to be announced.

 

CHILDREN’S PROGRAMS

 

Registration is required for all children’s programs (except films).  Reading Game participants must register in person.  For other programs, you may also register by phone (764-5085) beginning Saturday, June 24.  Enrollment is limited for most programs, with preference given to local residents, so be sure to register early.  Some programs are geared for specific age groups.  Children must be the minimum age for these programs by June 1.

 

It’s summertime again, and that means it’s time to play the Summer Reading Game!  Come to the Library and discover hidden riches, because this year’s theme is Books: A Treasure.   With a compass as your game piece, you’ll travel the world in search of a chest filled with gold, silver and jewels.  Treasure hunt through a castle on the Rhine, the Amazon jungle, a South Seas island and other exciting spots.   For every five books you read, you’ll move your compass to a new treasure hiding place.  There are treats and surprises along the way donated by Scotts Corner Market, Samuel Parker’s Landmark Country Market, and Chubby’s Hardware.  There’s a special grand prize for all children who complete the game (Grades 1-3, 25 books; grades 4 and up, 15 books).  Open to all children who are independent readers.  See the Librarian for more details.

 

Kindergarteners and preschoolers can discover Books: A Treasure, too.  They will move their sailboat game piece when they have been read to for at least 15 minutes a day and earn rewards.  Check with the Librarian for details.

 

Reading Game Kickoff:  Saturday, June 24.  Registration for all programs begins at 10:30 a.m.  At 11:00 a.m., enjoy “Tales and Tunes to Treasure!” with fabulous local entertainers, Beth and Scott and Friends.   All children welcome! 

 

Book Buddies – Preschoolers will love listening to stories read by 3rd graders and up.  Wednesdays, July 12 and August 16, 3:30 p.m.  Pound Ridge kids in grade 3 and up are invited to be “Book Buddies” to our preschoolers.  Please sign up in the Children’s Room.

 

Preschool Activities

 

Kindergarten Day For preschoolers who will start Kindergarten in the fall.  Come to the Library on Friday, June 9 from 1:15-3:00 p.m. Get your first library card, listen to stories and meet other kids who’ll be in your class in September.

 

Pajama Story Hour – A perennial favorite of the preschool set!  Kids come in pajamas with a blanket or stuffed animal.  Stories and snacks.  Ages 3-5,  Tuesdays, July 11 through August 22.  7:00 p.m.

 

Music Together with Maria Rochman.  Music for preschoolers and the grownups who love them.  Sing songs, play instruments, and try rhythm chants.  Ages 2-5.  Wednesday, July 26 at

3:30 p.m. and Thursday, August 3 at 11:00 a.m. 

 

Preschool Craft with Donna ChaiteTuesday, August 8, 11:00 a.m.  Ages 2-5.  Kids will paint a treasure chest and make a bookmark.  Limited enrollment.

Red/White/Blue, A Fourth of July craft with Donna Chaite Grades 2-5.  Friday, June 30, 3:30 p.m.  Limited enrollment.

 

Kamishibai (Paper Theater) with Theresa Okamoto – Spend a morning in Japan!  Discover a special Japanese art as you listen to stories and follow the action on picture cards.  Then play some Japanese games.  Ages 4-7.  Thursday, July 13, 11:00 a.m.

 

Gardening with Patricia Napoli – Feel the spirit of the ocean in summer as Patricia helps you create a seascape garden of ornamental grasses and seashells to take home.  Grades 2 and up.  Tuesday, July 18, 3:30 p.m.  Limited enrollment.

 

Stage Struck! – an acting workshop with Nora Maher.  Theater exercises, games, and improvisation.  A chance to act out fairy tales and stories.  Ages 8-12.  Thursday, July 20, 3:30 p.m.  Limited enrollment.

 

Jewelry-Making with Adina Fischer.  Both boys and girls will enjoy working with Pound Ridge’s own high school student Adina to make a wristband, neckpiece or key chain.  Grades 3 and up.  Thursday, July 27, 3:30 p.m.  Limited enrollment.

 

Chemistry in Everyday Life, with Jennifer Lyons.  Demonstration and hands-on experiments.  Ages 5-7.  Friday, July 28 from 3:30 – 4:30 p.m. 

 

Would you know how to find a hidden treasure?  Learn how at a Map and Compass program presented by the Westmoreland Sanctuary.  Pick up the basics of map reading and compass use.  A hands on program.   Grades 3 and up. Tuesday, August 1, 3:30 p.m.

Origami with Theresa Okamoto – Japanese paper folding. Ages 8 and up. Wednesday, August 2, 3:30 p.m.  Limited enrollment.

 

Cartooning Workshop with Mike Teator – Mike, a Westchester artist who recently appeared on the NBC Today Show, has taught drawing and painting for 15 years.  Draw with Mike as he creates some of your favorite cartoon characters.  All you need to bring is a smile.  Grades 3-6. Friday, August 4, 3:30 p.m.

 

Otis’ Safety Tails! – Kids will draw their favorite pet, learn how to make sure their pet stays healthy, and meet Otis who’ll help them learn the safe way to greet a dog.  Fun and educational!  Ages 5-10.  Wednesday, August 9, 3:30 p.m.

 

Tuesday Night at the Movies:  For elementary school children and older.  Full length feature films.  5:30 p.m. sharp!
